Four Nigerian banks ranked among world’s top 500
Four Nigeria banks have been rated among the world top 500 according to the banker and brand finance rating for this year. the banks ranked are as follows: first bank of Nigeria,
guaranty trust bank zenith bank and united bank of Africa.
First bank which has been topping the banking industry for five years now moves from the 336th position to the 320th position in the world which is a drastic move. Guaranty trust bank moved from the 417 to 385 in 2015.Zenith bank dropped 4 steps backwards from 388 in 2015 to 392 in 2016. UBA returned back to 447 in ranking
The Country Representative of The Banker magazine in Nigeria, Mr. Kunle Ogedengbe, noted that First Bank’s brand value increased to $322m in 2016 from $300m in 2015 while that of GTB also increased to $243m from $213m.
The 2016 brand value of Zenith Bank increased to $238m from $235 in 2015 while UBA that made a return to the ranking since 2012 has a brand value of $198m. UBA’s brand value in 2012 was $121m.
According to The Banker magazine, of the five countries in Africa that made the ranking, Nigeria has the highest brand value increase of $249m.
The Banker’s Top 500 Banking Brands ranking in conjunction with Brand Finance measures the value of financial services firms across the world, analysing specific sectors and geographies, and identifying the brands that have improved the most, as well as those that have suffered the greatest setbacks.

A brand value is the licensing rate that a third-party would need to pay to use the bank’s brand.
