Twitter Hires Former American Express Exec Leslie Berland As CMO
Former American Express executive Leslie Berland is
joining Twitter as its full-time CMO chief marketing
officer, according to a tweet by Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey on Tuesday morning.
“Welcoming @leslieberland to
Twitter!” Dorsey said in his tweet. “She will join as our CMO to help
tell the stories of our iconic product!”
Berland was formerly VP of global advertising,
marketing and digital at American Express.
Berland joined American Express in 2005 and helped the financial giant
form its first social media strategies. Re/code first reported on Sunday
that Berland was a likely pick for the role.
“Twitter is a service like no other,” Berland said in a
statement. “It has and continues to change the world, shaping how we
communicate and connect, how we’re entertained, informed and inspired. It
represents everything that’s relevant at each and every moment – to me, there’s
nothing more powerful.”
Berland also tweeted about her new position: Thanks @Jack! Excited to join you and the amazing teams to
bring to life the power, uniqueness and magic of Twitter! — Leslie Berland

Tuesday’s news followed confirmation by Twitter that a
handful of top executives are departing the company. On Sunday, Dorsey said in a tweet that head
of engineering Alex Roetter, head of media Katie Jacobs Stanton, head of product Kevin Weil
and head of human resources Skip Schipper have chosen to leave the
company.
