Blackberry moving towards Android

Image
BlackBerry's slide from leader of the smartphone pack to near obscurity has not been easy to watch, and it seems as if the company has decided that clasping to Android is the way to get its phone business back on track. The launch of  the BlackBerry Priv  was a big clue: a flagship handset running the latest version of Google's mobile operating system rather than the BlackBerry's own software. "The device is essentially our transition to  Android  ecosystem," Damian Tay, BlackBerry director   told the press. "As we secure Android, over a period of time, we would not have two platforms, and may have only Android as a [smartphone] platform. Tay said that Android and BB10 would co-exist for the time being but it sounds like the writing's on the wall. In fact, rumours that the company would switch OSes have been  swirling since last summer . "The future is really Android," added Tay. "We went for Android essentially for its ...

This smartphone's battery can last up to 15 days

Image
A new smartphone just hit the market that claims its battery can last 10 to 15 days without charging. The Oukitel K10000 is crammed with a 10,000mAh battery, which should hold almost four times the charge of a Samsung Galaxy S6, and five and a half times the charge of the iPhone 6. A full charge takes about three and a half hours, according to Oukitel, a Chinese gadget maker. Smartphone software has gotten better at managing apps and programs to conserve battery life over the past few years, but not many manufacturers have upgraded battery capacity itself. Oukitel says it's doing both. The K10000 has a "super smart standby" mode, and "intelligent power consumption management," and is the "world's largest battery capacity smartphone," the company claims. The phone can even be used to charge other devices. But even if its battery technology is as advanced as the company says it is, the rest of the phone's specs are still stuck in the past...

Using Patient Fingerprints to Break Down Medical Record Silos

Image
A startup uses encryption and fingerprint authentication to compare medical records across providers—and aims to make them easier to move, too. For the over 40 million people served by the more than 300 health systems working with startup CrossChx, checking in for a doctor’s appointment is much like unlocking an iPhone. All you need is your right index finger. Touch it onto a fingerprint reader at the check-in desk, and your identity is verified. Your driver’s license can stay in your wallet. As well as making doctor visits simpler and preventing fraud, CrossChx’s founders say that its system can eventually help free U.S. patient records from the inefficiencies and errors imposed by the usually isolated and often outdated IT systems of health-care providers. Although the U.S. government has spent billions to encourage uptake of electronic medical records, many of the intended benefits have proved elusive. CrossChx says that it has found that 14 percent of records have s...

The president expressed the concern on Saturday in Bauchi at the 19th to 22nd convocation ceremony of Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University, Bauchi. Represented by Prof. Julius Okojie, Executive Secretary, National Universities Commission, he said that “it is worrisome that no Nigerian university is quoted among the top 100 universities in the world. “We rank below a thousand, if we do not aspire to be among the world class universities, we cannot boast of robust system capable of making the country among the top economies of the world. “We have abundance of talents who excel elsewhere but appear incapacitated at home. This is unacceptable. “Whatever makes our abundant talents fail at home and excel abroad must be identified and neutralised for our benefit and that of our future generation,’’ Buhari said. He blamed incessant strikes by teachers as ...
